Sinh Village paintings are more than a form of folk art – they have long been woven into the cultural and religious life of the people of Hue. In terms of artistic techniques, they share many similarities with Dong Ho and Hang Trong paintings. Many researchers believe the craft was introduced by artisans who migrated from Thanh Hoa Province to the southern territories ruled by the Nguyen Lords (“Chúa Nguyễn”) before taking root in Hue.

Unlike many folk paintings created primarily for display, Sinh Village paintings have traditionally served spiritual purposes, accompanying prayers for peace, religious ceremonies, and ancestral worship for generations.

THE CRAFTSMANSHIP
BEHIND EVERY PAINTING

Sinh Village painting is completed through seven traditional stages. From cutting the paper and applying the shell coating to woodblock printing, drying, mixing pigments, hand-colouring, and adding the final details, each step is carried out entirely by hand, requiring patience and precise craftsmanship.

The process begins with Dó Paper (poonah paper), an essential foundation for every artwork. Before printing, the paper is coated with a thin layer of finely ground shell powder collected from Tam Giang Lagoon and mixed with rice flour. This traditional coating strengthens the paper, helps the pigments adhere more effectively, and creates the soft, luminous sheen that distinguishes Sinh Village paintings.

Once the printing process is complete, artisans carefully hand-colour each piece using pigments derived entirely from plants and other natural materials. Printed from hand-carved woodblocks, traditionally made from jackfruit or ugava wood, the paintings are finished in vibrant shades of blue, yellow, orange, red, black, and green.

Every carved woodblock and every brushstroke carries forward generations of cultural memory, preserving not only a traditional craft but also the enduring beliefs and customs that have flourished along the banks of the Perfume River.
