The Black Hmong are among the earliest inhabitants of this “land of mist”, calling scenic villages such as Su Pan, Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, and Cat Cat home. Over generations, their residence has adapted harmoniously to the steep slopes and harsh mountain climate. Characterised by rustic rammed-earth walls and stone fences, their distinctive three-room houses feature dual entrances and small windows, leaving a lasting impression.

Black Hmong textiles express their beauty through the depth of handwoven linen and traditional indigo-dyeing techniques, perfected through dozens of painstaking soaking and dyeing processes. From these humble materials, garments are crafted to withstand the mountain’s wind and frost, reflecting the enduring spirit of its people.

Springtime brings these villages to life with the vibrant celebrations of the “Gầu Tào” Festival – a sacred gathering to pray for health, prosperity, and a fruitful harvest. Following traditional rituals, the forests echo with the cheerful sounds of flutes and pipes, the rich aroma of traditional horse meat stew (“Thắng Cố”), the rhythmic pounding of rice cakes, joyous laughter during “Pao” throwing and traditional games, marking the beginning of a new year with vitality and hope.

In peaceful hamlets such as Ta Phin, Nam Cang, Thanh Kim, and Trung Chai, the Red Dao captivate visitors with their rich heritage. Having journeyed across mountains and rivers from ancient Jiangnan, China to settle here over 300 years ago, they have developed a distinctive way of life shaped by their surroundings.

Unlike the Hmong’s rammed-earth structures, Red Dao homes feature low-slung wooden roofs crafted to withstand strong mountain winds. Inside, the layout reflects the rhythms of daily life: a main kitchen set back for cooking, a secondary hearth near the entrance to provide warmth during winter frost, an elevated loft above the stove for preserving crops, and a sacred altar dedicated to the Ancestor King.

Against the tranquil greens of Sapa, the vibrant attire of the Red Dao stands out like a warm flame. Brilliant crimson permeates every detail – from hand-embroidered floral motifs and shimmering silver buttons along the lapels to their distinctive red headscarves. At traditional weddings, the resonant melodies of the “Pí Lè” – a traditional double-reed woodwind instrument played by ethnic minority communities – echo through the mountains, while intricate ceremonial garments bring colour and grace to a celebration that unfolds like a love story.

While everyday attire showcases their artistic flair, the “Cấp Sắc” Ritual – traditional coming-of-age ceremony, is regarded as a sacred and significant rite of passage in the life of a Dao man. The ceremony is divided into three levels – three lamps, seven lamps, and twelve lamps – referring to the number of lamps bestowed upon the initiate during the ritual. Each level carries its own cultural significance.

THE TAY ETHNIC GROUP (“TÀY”)

In southeastern Sapa, Ban Ho village, Muong Bo commune and Thanh Phu village unfold across fertile valleys along winding rivers and streams, home to the Tay people. Their traditional wooden stilt houses, particularly those built in the “Con Thong” architectural style, feature eight main wooden pillars and sixteen secondary ones, serving as distinctive expressions of traditional Tay architecture. Inside, the space is thoughtfully arranged, with the central bay reserved for ancestor worship, while a nine-step wooden staircase symbolises the nine spirits of a Tay woman.

While the Hmong favour deep indigo and the Red Dao embrace vibrant red, Tay clothing is distinguished by understated simplicity. Free of embroidered patterns, their graceful long tunics gently follow the silhouette, accented by a softly dyed purple fabric sash at the waist and handcrafted silver jewellery for a touch of subtle refinement.

Music and singing are central to Tay culture, particularly their gentle courtship melodies. In the first lunar month, these folk tunes resound across the valleys during the “Lồng Tồng” Festival, a vibrant celebration that reflects the Tay people’s deep connection with nature and spiritual beliefs. After a year of hard work, the festival is a time to express gratitude to the gods and pray for protection, favourable weather, and a bountiful harvest in the year ahead.

From traditional houses and clothing to the sounds of flutes, songs, and ancient rituals, each community contributes a unique melody to the soul of this misty land. Behind these seemingly simple traditions lie generations of care, dedication, and a deep commitment to preserving them. Amidst the changes of time, this beauty endures in the way people live, work, and cherish their roots.
